Widely recognized as a pioneer in Digital Therapeutics, WellDoc was the first digital health company to demonstrate significant health improvements through digital therapies in randomized clinical trials.

In 2013, WellDoc launched their first FDA approved mobile prescription therapy for type 2 diabetes, BlueStar RX.

Following the success of BlueStar RX, WellDoc began to explore how to bring the value of their prescription app to a broader consumer audience.

WellDoc turned to Guidea to drive UX research and innovation for this new product and simultaneously build out Design Operations for their organization.


How do we consistently deliver great UX that improves people’s health?
Assess, Educate & Align
Together, WellDoc and Guidea took a comprehensive look at the products, processes, team dynamics and company cultures that influence the delivery of user experiences. Based on this assessment, we crafted a custom plan for integrating UX Design Operations throughout WellDoc.

To generate alignment for this organizational change, activity-based, hands-on workshops were conducted with WellDoc teams including executives, clinicians, engineers, data analytics, marketing, and designers to validate and pilot new UX processes and tools.

As classic over-achievers, the WellDoc team signed up to pilot the new system with two high-stakes, time-sensitive initiatives:

1. Redesign the existing Rx Application

2. Create a new consumer experience

How do we innovate without slowing down?
Divide and conquer
During the early assessment, we identified areas for quick fixes as well as systemic issues that would require research and ideation. The tactical fixes were put on a fast track of 3-week design and user testing sprints. This team was trained in rapid prototyping making use of the newest advances in Sketch, Craft, Invision and user testing platforms.
In a parallel path, the research team tackled WellDoc’s biggest challenge- driving deep user engagement to affect behavior change. Superficial gamification would have been ineffective, possibly detrimental to engagement, so we conducted research to understand and create concepts that would align with our audience’s true motivations.
